Hundreds of children across the nation have been killed by a parent during family court proceedings

More than 700 children across the nation have died in the custody of a parent or parental-figure during circumstances involving divorce, separation, custody, visitation, or child support, according to the Center for Judicial Excellence.

Notes: "Preventable" cases are child deaths that occurred after the court was warned of parental risk to child safety, according to CJE. In about 30 of these cases, the perpetrator was a child’s aunt, uncle or a parent’s partner who served as a parental or authority figure in the child’s life. The map coordinates are approximations rather than actual sites of deaths. All information in this map is based on data collected by CJE.
