Wisconsin ratepayers will owe over $1 billion on retired coal power plants by the end of 2026 — a total that may climb in the coming years.

Units at four power plants in Wisconsin retired with remaining value on the books, becoming so-called "stranded assets." Utility customers will pay off the remaining value of those units over time. The coming retirement of units at Edgewater Generating Station, Oak Creek Power Plant and Columbia Energy Center may also result in stranded assets.
