Note: R&D Expenditures are from the National Science Foundation's 2021 Higher Education Research and Development Survey. Fall enrollment and number of doctoral degrees are from The U.S. Department of Education's Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. Doctoral degree counts includes both first and second majors for only doctoral degrees in research and scholarship (excluding other and professional doctorates). Doctoral degree and R&D Expenditures are calculated by taking the higher of either the most recent data year or the average of the past 3 years.
