284 km of the 642 km journey from Auckland to Wellington have been identified as having a safe and appropriate travel speed of 80 km/h according to the high benefit portion of Waka Kotahi's Road to Zero speed analysis.

Using Waka Kotahi's travel time analysis the New Zealand Herald estimates that changing the speed limit from 100 km/h to 80km/h on all 284 km of road would add about 20 minutes to the approximately 8 hour journey.
