Where rural U.S. hospitals have closed since 2005

176 rural hospitals have closed since 2005, including 17 in 2020 alone, according to the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Many of the buildings have been converted to other uses, such as outpatient clinics and nursing homes.

The size of the marker reflects the number of hospital beds. Hospitals are listed when they stop providing general short-term, acute inpatient care.
