America's most polarized state legislatures

Nearly every state legislature in the U.S. became more polarized between 1996 and 2020, according to a 2022 paper from political scientists Boris Shor and Nolan McCarty. Their analysis, which calculated polarization scores based on voting patterns and candidate surveys, found that between 2016 and 2020, Colorado's General Assembly became the country's most polarized state legislature.
