Impact of speaking languages other than English

This chart shows how much the two-party-preferred (2PP) vote differs between an ‘average’ electorate and electorates with high proportion of people who speak a language other than English.

The figures indicate impact on Coalition’s 2PP vote (%). Except in 2001, speaking another language is strongly associated with support for the Coalition.

The analysis looks at more than 30 different socio-demographic characteristics from the Census. The ‘average’ electorate is constructed using the average value (either mean or median, across all electorates) for each of these.
