Where the wild things are

The 17 megadiverse countries comprise about 70 per cent of the world’s biodiversity.

To be classified as megadiverse, a nation must have at least 5,000 plants that occur naturally only within its borders, as well as a marine ecosystem. The 17 nations are Australia, Brazil, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, South Africa, United States, and Venezuela.
