School Transportation Related Fatalities Among Children (2014–2023)

This chart visualizes the distribution of 209 school-age child fatalities that occurred in school-transportation-related crashes between 2014 and 2023, according to NHTSA data. The figures include children who were occupants of school buses, passengers in other vehicles, pedestrians, pedalcyclists, or "other" nonoccupants involved in these incidents.

While most assume buses pose the greatest danger, nearly 40% of all school-transportation-related child deaths (79 cases) occurred when children were pedestrians, not vehicle occupants. This underscores that pickup and drop-off zones remain the most hazardous moments of the school commute.
