Relationship between swing and COVID-19 cases

While there was no significant correlation found between COVID deaths and the swing, there was some significance in the relationship between cases and the swing. Lassen, which had the most severe case rate at the time of the recall, also was the county Newsom did poorest in. Plus, Lassen had the sharpest swing against Newsom. Fresno, Riverside and Orange counties, which lie right on the trend line, had an almost 50-50 split in recall votes. The blue counties tend to be clustered in the lower end of the case rate spectrum. There are exceptions, notably like Los Angeles, which is the most populated county in the state and was the national epicenter of the virus in the 2020 winter season. Out of the three variables, COVID-19 cases had the second strongest correlation with the swing. It accounted for about 20% of the variation across counties.
