The map below shows average student loan debt of borrowers by state in 2023. The average borrower owes around $35,000 but in 10 states plus Washington, DC, borrowers owe more than $36,500 in student loans. Borrowers in Washington, DC, Maryland and Georgia have the highest student loan debt (over $40,000).
