What is a fire containment line?

When a wildfire is reported to be contained by a certain percentage, it refers to the amount of the fire's perimeter that has been cleared of fuels such as timber and brush. Perimeters are most often adjacent to a road or natural feature that can help prevent the spread of the fire.

Note: Even when the fire is 100 percent contained, that does not mean it has been completely extinguished.
