Farmers' costs for seeds far outstrip income from crops

Into the mid-1990s, crop prices and seed prices fluctuated at roughly similar rates. But since genetically modified seed varieties, which can be patented, became widely available for key crops, including corn, soybeans and cotton, prices for harvests have grown much more slowly than those crops' seed prices.
