California enrolls fewer people on food assistance than the national average

The nationwide average enrollment of eligible people on food assistance programs is about 77%. In California, only 71% of eligible residents are enrolled.

States may have an enrollment percentage above 100% because some households with income above 125% of the federal poverty limit are eligible for SNAP. The SNAP gross income limit is 130 percent of poverty, and some states use a higher income limit.
