Table of federal grant totals to state and local governments - 1940 - 2023

The table below shows how much the federal government provided to state and local governments in grants from 1940 through 2023. It shows total amounts and how much of those totals were payments to individuals. The first two columns show amounts in billions of dollars not adjusted for inflation. The second two columns show amounts in billions of dollars according to the constant dollar value of fiscal year 2017 in order to adjust for inflation.
