This Spring, Hundreds of Thousands of Californians Stopped Receiving UI Benefits When Their Benefit Year Ended

Number of claimants exiting the regular UI system between March 7th, 2021 and May 22nd, 2021,
by the Number of weeks until the end of their benefit year

Includes claimants for Regular UI only. An exit is defined as the last payment before a gap of two or more weeks without a certification for benefits. (If a claimant certifies for those weeks retroactively, they are not counted as having exited). Claimants who transition to receiving payments through the PUA program are not counted as having exited.
Upon reaching the end of their benefit year, claimants who have earned income in the preceding 18 months are required to file a transitional claim in order to continue receiving UI benefits.
In this chart, "-1" corresponds to the group of claimants who received their last payment before exiting the UI system with 1 week remaining in their benefit year.
