Japan and South Korea are engaged in a fresh spat over Tokyo's bid to nominate the remains of centuries-old gold and silver mines on Sado island off Niigata prefecture for Unesco World Heritage status. The mines are controversial for their links to forced wartime labour, and follows a past dispute over the recognition of Hashima island off Nagasaki prefecture.
