Texas Law Dog Gig Work Risk Index: Full State Rankings, 2026

This table ranks all 50 states and D.C. by the overall roadway risk facing gig and delivery drivers. Arizona ranks highest with an overall risk score of 75.16, followed by Nevada and South Carolina, while Texas ranks No. 9 nationally with a score of 50.35. The overall ranking combines gig and delivery work exposure with speeding, urban roadway, pedestrian, and pedalcyclist risk to show where drivers face the most challenging combination of working exposure and road conditions.

The overall risk score is based on five equally weighted measures: gig exposure, speeding risk, urban roadway risk, pedestrian risk, and pedalcyclist risk, with each factor accounting for 20% of the final score. Each measure was normalized to a 0–100 scale using min-max normalization, with higher scores representing greater risk. Gig exposure is based on 2023 U.S. Census Bureau Nonemployer Statistics for NAICS 492, Couriers and Messengers, and NAICS 4853, Taxi and Limousine Service. These industries are used as a proxy for gig and delivery work exposure and should not be interpreted as the exact number of app-based drivers. Speeding, urban roadway, pedestrian, and pedalcyclist measures use 2024 NHTSA FARS data. The index measures the combined road environment and gig/delivery exposure within each state and does not represent confirmed crash rates for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, or any other individual platform. A component score of 100 represents the highest observed risk level among the 50 states and D.C. for that measure, while 0 represents the lowest.
