The number of bicycle and pedestrian projects funded reached a high with the implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) after 2009. The number of projects in this chart reflects the number of projects initiating in each fiscal year coded for the improvement type of "Facilities for Pedestrians and Bicycles," "Safety and Education for Peds/Bicyclists," or "Preservation of Abandoned Railway Corridors" in FHWA's Fiscal Management Information System.
