The number of bicycle and pedestrian projects funded by federal programs was not tracked until 1992 after the passage of the landmark Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA). The number of bicycle and pedestrian projects funded reached a high with the implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) after 2009. While funding has generally increased, the number of projects has been lower since the passage of the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act in 2015.
