Where Solo Businesses Generate the Highest and Lowest Average Gross Receipts

This table compares average gross receipts per nonemployer business across the 30 major U.S. metros studied. The accompanying density rank shows whether metros with higher business turnover also have a high concentration of solo businesses. The receipts ranking is separate from the Side-Hustle Capital Index and does not affect a metro’s index score.

Average annual gross receipts represent business turnover before expenses and taxes. They should not be described as income, earnings, profit, salary, or take-home pay.
“Compared with 30-metro median” measures the relative difference from the study median of approximately $57,173 per nonemployer business.
The receipts ranking is separate from the Side-Hustle Capital Index. Receipts do not add points to or change the Census-based density ranking.
