Texans with mental health concerns who died of unnatural causes in county jail custody, by the state's 10 largest counties

Since 2012, deaths of mentally ill inmates in Texas jails has increased 1,200 percent. Below is the amount of mentally ill inmates who died in county jail custody in each of the state's 10 largest counties per capita. 

*Unnatural deaths include homicide, suicide, accidents and COVID-19. Deaths where the cause has yet to be determined are not included in this count. **To find these numbers, the Landing divided the total number of deaths in each county by the average daily population of each county jail. We then multiplied it by 1,000 for the per capita rate.
