Austin's ambitious plan to reduce car dependency

The city wants to significantly slash the share of people commuting to work by car alone to 50% by 2039 - a time during which Austin's population is expected to double

2019 data pre-pandemic; the city says continued high rates of residents working from home have reduced rush hour traffic; transit ridership as of Aug. 2021 is still some 40% below pre-pandemic levels
