Black Americans experience higher poverty rates than white Americans

In 2020, almost one in five Black people in the United States - 19.5 percent - lived below the poverty line. Only about 8 percent of white people lived below the poverty line.
White refers to non-Hispanic white, Black refers to Black alone. The poverty rate is the share of people whose family income is below the official family-size-adjusted poverty threshold.
