U.S. corn production has greatly expanded since Congress created the Renewable Fuel Standard in 2007, which requires transportation fuels to contain specified amounts of biofuels. Studies show that land conversion and fertilizer use to grow corn significantly reduce, and may even negate, climate benefits from replacing gasoline with corn ethanol.
