UPMC thrives financially during pandemic

Despite the pandemic, UPMC generated more than $1 billion in profits this year and last year. Even as hospital services were impacted early in the pandemic, the health system was buoyed by its insurance business, return on investments and roughly $620 million in government aid.

Note: Profits are called “excess revenue” in nonprofit accounting.
