Energy use by US data centers is rising much faster than overall consumption
Chart shows year-to-year change in terawatt hours (TWh), with overall consumption remaining relatively stable over the past decade — and even dipping during the pandemic — while data center energy use continues to climb.
A line chart titled “Data center energy consumption has nearly tripled since 2014.” It shows total US data center energy consumption rising steadily from about 55 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2014 to roughly 170 TWh in 2023. The y-axis ranges from 0 to 200 TWh, and the x-axis spans 2014 to 2023. Source: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Chart by Katie Malone/Technical.ly.
