Globally, fossil fuel use has risen significantly since 1965, with natural gas up 525%, oil up 194% and coal up 178%. The global population increased by about 140% over the same period.
Three line charts show global consumption of major fossil fuels wince 1965. Oil consumption is highest. Coal, second-highest, bumped up in the early 2000s but has leveled off since about 2010. Gas, third, has steadily increased the most, while the others' trajectories have been more erratic, however in 2022, with Russia's war on Ukraine disrupting markets, gas consumption declined.
