Recent yearly biofuel consumption includes 14 billion gallons of ethanol (mostly from corn), 3 billion gallons of bio-based diesel (mostly from soybeans) and merely 10 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol from nonfood sources. Under the RFS, this level of usage is scored as 20 billion ethanol-equivalent gallons, which is well below the 2022 target of 36 billion gallons – mainly because cellulosic ethanol production is far below its RFS target.
