The ups and downs of California salmon

Salmon populations in Central Valley rivers have declined for decades. They also tend to follow patterns in natural hydrology. Wet periods are often followed by an uptick of adult Chinook returning from the ocean to spawn several years later, while droughts often precede population plunges.
