States With Capital Punishment Unchanged in 2024

Twenty-three U.S. states have abolished the death penalty. Among the 27 states with capital punishment, four have currently paused executions through governor-issued executive actions. On Nov. 26, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said the state will again start seeking the death penalty in criminal prosecutions in 2025 following a two-year hiatus. On Dec. 27, Tennessee announced that it has resolved issues with its execution protocol, and will be able to restart executions in 2025.
