U.S. deaths from coronavirus, compared to other leading causes

In 2020, COVID-19 ranked among the leading causes of death in the United States. This chart compares deaths from the coronavirus to deaths in 2019 from heart disease, cancer and chronic respiratory disease, using federal data compiled by researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University. They found the virus was likely the top cause of death nationally during parts of last spring and through much of December.
