Winter Weather Conditions Linked to Fatal Crashes in 2023

In 2023, there were 320 driving fatalities attributed to colder weather conditions. This chart shows the distribution of 2023 driving fatalities associated with cold-weather conditions, based on FARS crash classifications. Snow-related conditions made up the overwhelming majority of winter weather deaths, followed by sleet, hail, blowing snow, and freezing rain.

Fatality counts are sourced from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) for the 2023 reporting year. Only crashes coded with winter-related atmospheric conditions were included in this analysis. Counts represent total fatalities, not total crashes.
