Measuring ‘True Poverty’ in New Jersey

A family with one adult and two children would have been living in poverty in New Jersey if its annual income was less than $70,372 in 2019, a substantially higher figure than the official federal poverty level of $20,598. This "true poverty level" was calculated by Legal Services of New Jersey, which concludes that while the federal government said that 9.2% of New Jersey residents were living in poverty in 2019, the true poverty level that year was 33.3%.
