Estimated costs for mental illnesses in Canada

The estimated total annual direct costs in billions for all mental illness patients every 10 years.

Direct costs among patients experiencing different mental health problems vary. A number of cost elements like caregiving were not included in this estimate. The cost per case for patients with cognitive impairments, such as Parkinson's disease, includes long-term care, physician and hospital care, medication and out-of-pocket expenses. The cost per case for all other mental illnesses includes physician and hospital care, medication, community and social services and income support.
