Counties Where Black Americans Are Most at Risk for Cardiovascular Disease

Counties with a score closer to 0 are considered low risk, and counties with a score closer to 6 are considered high risk.

Only counties that contain the national level of 14.2% Black population are mapped. Population estimates were obtained from the 2020 Decennial Census Redistricting Data. The cardiovascular risk index consists of variables and data taken from the 2022 County Health Rankings dataset, and includes % adult obesity, % diabetes, food environment index, % smokers, % excessive drinking, and % physical inactivity. The food index is scored from 0 (worst, minimal health food) to 10 (best, access to healthy food). For more detailed information please refer to the methodology section of this article.
