Most Pennsylvania electric customers can expect a significant increase in energy charges on June 1, reflecting the higher cost of natural gas to produce electrical power. Utilities adjust the energy charge quarterly. They are required to pass along the actual cost of the power without a markup. The charges apply to the majority of customers who choose to get default supply service from their utilities rather than shop for power from a competitive supplier (rates for competitive suppliers are also going up). Energy charges make up about half of a typical residential electric bill.
