The notional loss was calculated by taking the difference between average prices for each month and MSPs in major producing states (those that produce more than 95%) for each crop. Then multiplying the difference with the quantity of crop that arrived in each state for the particular month. Finally, for each crop the notional losses in each state were added together to arrive at the figures shown here.
