Closing the Gap

Democrats held a 10.5% voter registration advantage over Republicans at the time of Donald Trump’s election in November of 2016. With the exception of 2018 — a particularly strong election year for Democrats — that gap shrank with each passing year. Republican efforts to build their share of voters rapidly accelerated after 2022 as they cut Democrats' advantage by two-thirds in just three years.
