Prison Facilities with the Highest Rates of Sexual Victimization by Gender 2023–24

This table shows U.S. prisons with high reports of sexual victimization, whether between inmates or involving staff and inmates. Nine men’s prisons and eight women’s prisons were flagged as high-rate facilities based on combined reports of both types of incidents. Each had a rate of sexual victimization at least twice the national average, which stands at 4.0% for men’s prisons and 5.4% for women’s prisons.

Note: High-rate prisons are those in which the lower bound of the 95% confidence interval is larger than 1.55 times the average among prisons by sex of inmates housed. These 17 facilities are designated as having high rates of any sexual victimization because their lower bound estimate is greater than 4.0% times 1.55 (or 6.20%) for male prisons or 5.4% times 1.55 (or 8.37%) for female prisons.
