Underlying causes in Black pregnancy-related deaths

Data from Maternal Mortality Review Committees in 36 U.S. states, 2017-2019. Data was broken down by race. The leading cause for white and Hispanic women was mental health conditions, and for Asian women it was hemorrhaging.

The underlying causes of pregnancy-related deaths for Black women, with cardiac and coronary conditions as the leading cause.
Cardiac and coronary conditions include deaths of coronary artery disease, pulmonary hypertension, acquired and congenital valvular heart disease, vascular aneurysm, hypertensive cardiovascular disease, Marfan Syndrome, conduction defects, vascular malformations, and other cardiovascular disease, per the CDC.
