Percent change in drug overdose deaths by state, 2020 vs. 2019

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 2020 had the most drug overdose deaths on record. Deaths rose nearly 30 percent on average across the nation, with Illinois' 3,573 last year representing a 27.3 percent rise over 2019. Cook County officials have been saying for months that they fear the pandemic has fueled a rise in overdose deaths.
