Monarch butterflies migrate to SLO County in highest numbers in decades

San Luis Obispo County typically has some of the highest numbers of overwintering monarch butterflies in California. The important pollinator species has been considered to be teetering on the edge of extinction due to devastatingly low numbers in recent years. But experts are hopeful that the higher counts in 2021 and 2022 show an upward trend beginning.
