Retirements from Congress by month, 2011-2020

The following shows the number of announced retirements from Congress by month and by whether the announcement was made the year of an election or on an off year.

There were eight congressional retirements announced two years or more before the election in which the incumbent did not seek re-election. They are included in the "Election year" count for the year in which the announcements were made. (1) Rep. Shelley Moore Capito announced in 2012 she would not seek re-election in 2014. (2, 3) Reps. Michael Fitzpatrick and Charles Rangel announced in 2014 they would not seek re-election in 2016. (4, 5) Reps. Kristi Noem and Michelle Lujan Grisham announced in November and December of 2016, respectively, that they would not seek re-election in 2018. (6) Sen. Lamar Alexander announced in 2018 he would not seek re-election in 2020. (7) Sen. Richard Burr announced in July 2016 he would not seek re-election in 2022. (8) Sen. Pat Toomey announced in October 2020 he would not seek re-election in 2022.
