Deaths in New Jersey have leaped 42% amid the pandemic

This year, 17,500 more people died in New Jersey from March through September than is typical, state mortality data shows. All of the state's 21 counties saw deaths skyrocket, led by Hudson and Essex, where deaths doubled.

Typical deaths are based on average deaths from 2015-2019.
