Donald Trump lost Philadelphia by 471,000 votes in 2020, but that deficit was the smallest for a Republican candidate in the city since George W. Bush’s 412,000-vote loss to John Kerry in 2004. Trump’s haul of 132,740 votes in 2020 was also the highest for a Republican candidate since George H.W. Bush’s total in 1992. The last Republican candidate to carry Philadelphia was Herbert Hoover, who defeated Franklin D. Roosevelt by 71,000 votes in 1932.
