The North Atlantic right whale population has struggled

The North Atlantic right whale population was believed to number in the thousands in the 1600s and early 1700s, but it fell as whale hunting accelerated. In the 2010s, a large number of deaths from vessel strikes and entanglements in fishing gear reversed a slow recovery. The shaded area reflects population estimates.
