Demographic breakdown by race/ethnicity of people killed by law enforcement

Data on individuals killed by police officers from 2013 to 2019 shows victims identified as Black were disproportionately represented. Roughly 13 percent of the U.S. population is Black but a quarter of individuals killed by law enforcement officers were Black. The shares are higher if we take into account whether a person was unarmed or attacking.

In the absence of a centralized and uniform database on persons killed by police officers, Mapping Police Violence data only accounts for those which have been publicly reported by news outlets or by the police departments themselves. It is likely an undercount.
