Philly’s Population Decline Continues

Philadelphia lost an estimated 16,000 residents in 2023, following a dozen years of gains that interrupted a long-term trend of population decline. Since April 1, 2020, near the start of the pandemic, the city has lost over 53,000 residents.

Note: The one-year population change is not shown for the first year in each decade (such as 2020), because estimates are reset after the decennial census, and are not comparable to the previous year.
