The majority of low-wage workers are adults: Around 6 out of 10 low-wage workers are 30 years old or older

The bars show the share of all workers in the labor force and the share of workers paid low wages for each age group. For example, 21.8% of all workers are 20-29 years old, but 20–29 year-olds make up close to a third (32.9%) of all low-wage workers.

Bar chart showing the share of low-wage workers within a particular age group in comparison to the share of all workers within that same range. Age groups are 16-17, 18-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-54, 55-64, and 65 and older. While younger workers are overrepresented in low-wage work relative to their share of the workforce, close to 40% of all low-wage workers are 40 or older.
